Tips to Help You When Our Office is Closed
Vehicle trapped in your garage?
If your garage door won't go up, there are many things that can cause the problem. You can try some of these common troubleshooting tips, if you feel comfortable:
Step 1:
If you have an opener attached to your door, pull the release cord (typically a red or white cord hanging down from the opener) and try to run the opener without the door attached. If you can see the trolley or chain moving on the rail, then your opener is probably fine and the problem is related to the door itself, so you should proceed to step 2. If the trolley or chain is not moving, then the opener is not operating properly. Check the following items:
- Plug something into the outlet that the opener is plugged into to verify that there is power to the outlet.
- Unplug the opener and open the motor housing to see if a gear is broken or stripped or if a belt is burned.
Step 2:
Try to lift the door yourself, with the opener still unhooked. If the door is extremely heavy or does not move at all, please look for the following:
- Broken spring? These are either on a pipe across the top of the door or stretching out from the rear of the garage door track.
- Broken cable? These run up the sides of the door.
- Rollers out of the track?
- Bent track?
- Something stuck in the track?
Since a typical garage door is very heavy and springs are under great tension, we recommend that you call a qualified professional to fix most of the problems above. On most doors that we install, certain bolts and lag screws have red paint on them. These red fasteners denote extreme danger points and should not be serviced by the customer. If you find that a spring is broken in step 2 above, but would like to try to get a vehicle out of the garage during hours that we are not open, you may choose to try to open the garage door yourself. This can be done by either getting additional lifting assistance from another person(s) or by re-connecting the opener to the door and trying to share the lifting load between yourself and the opener.
We Admire Your Efforts — But Be Careful!
Please note that using an opener to assist in lifting a door with a broken spring may possibly cause damage to the opener (or your back!). Whichever method you choose to raise your garage door, you must then brace the door up so it does not fall causing injury or property damage. We suggest a vice grip or clamp be attached securely to the track just under the bottom roller(s) of the door. A step ladder can also be set up in the door opening just below the door. If you choose to open your door before we can arrive, you do so at your own risk, but we offer this advice so if you are determined to get your vehicle out, you can do so in the safest manner possible.
For any problem with your garage door, just call us at (715) 723-0742 or (715) 836-9550 and schedule your repair service.
Garage Door Maintenance
Garage doors and garage openers have many moving parts so we suggest annual maintenance to enhance the operation and life span of your garage door and opener.
Want us to do it? Just call us at (715) 723-0742 or (715) 836-9550 and schedule a preventative maintenance visit.
Want to fix your garage door yourself? We suggest a light weight oil, such as 3-IN-1 Oil be applied to all moving parts such as roller bearings, torsion bar bearings, hinge joints, opener drive sprocket bearing, opener idler pulley and opener chain. Do not use grease.
